What is Laparoscopic Hernia Repair?
Laparoscopic hernia repair is a minimally invasive surgical technique designed to repair a hernia using several small incisions. In this procedure, a surgeon uses a laparoscope to see inside your abdomen. He then will make three small incisions on the outside of your abdomen - one for the laparoscope and two for the instruments. This surgery requires that patients be put under anesthesia while the surgeon uses tools to push the hernia back. A mesh patch is then applied to repair the hernia. This procedure allows the surgeon to examine the groin areas and any defects on hernias. There are three different types of laparoscopic hernia repairs - umbilical, inguinal, and ventral.
Umbilical Hernia Repair: This hernia repair occurs near the belly button where a bulge appears. Intestine, fat, or fluid is pushed through a weak spot in the belly.
Inguinal Hernia Repair: Surgical repair occurs within the groin area when fatty or intestinal tissue pushes through the inguinal canal. This canal is at the base of the abdomen.
Ventral Hernia Repair: Repair of a bulge through an opening in the muscles on the abdomen. It usually occurs near the navel or at the site of a surgical scar.
What is the Recovery Time for Laparoscopic Hernia Repairs?
The recovery time is usually faster, with laparoscopic hernia repair surgery involving small procedures. Patients are generally back to their routine a week sooner than with an open surgery procedure. However, with a more involved procedure, patients may need to stay in the hospital longer for an average length of 1.5 days. Most people who have this surgery can go home the same day. Recovering from a ventral hernia repair usually takes longer than an inguinal procedure without using this technique.
What Diagnoses are Treated with Laparoscopic Hernia Repairs?
Laparoscopic hernia repair surgeries treat bulging hernias that generally occur within the abdominal cavity, between the chest and the hip. These include umbilical, inguinal, and ventral hernias. If a person notices an unusual bulge in the abdomen or groin area, causing them pain, they must immediately see a doctor.
How Do You Prepare for Laparoscopic Hernia Repair?
A person must prepare before their surgery. They should discuss with their doctor any side effects and risks concerning the procedure. The patient should also bring any medications they are currently taking and inform the surgeon about any severe medical reactions to anesthesia.
On the day of the operation, a patient must:
- Not eat or drink for the time specified by your surgeon or the Pre-Admission Testing nurse.
- Clean your abdomen with a mild antibacterial soap when bathing.
- Brush your teeth and rinse your mouth with mouthwash.
- Don't shave near the surgical site.
- Let your surgical team know about any changes to your health since you last spoke with a Pre-Admission Testing nurse.
