Vasectomy
What is a Vasectomy?
A vasectomy is an outpatient procedure that men undergo that permanently prevents sperm from joining in with the other fluids in semen. Approximately half a million American men undergo this voluntary sterilization annually, doing away with condoms and/or their partner's long-term hormonal birth control use. The traditional technique involves a urologist making a tiny incision with a scalpel to create a gap in the vas deferens. Another technique available is the no-scalpel vasectomy, which can be combined with a no-needle anesthetic to numb the scrotum without a sharp or stinging poke.
Why Should I Consider Getting a Vasectomy?
- A vasectomy is a simpler procedure and an easier recovery for you versus your female partner undergoing tubal ligation.
- It can offer peace of mind when you’ve decided that your family is complete.
- Vasectomy has an extremely low failure rate, especially when compared with other methods of birth control.
- You will still have the same libido and the same volume of ejaculation. Your testosterone levels are not impacted. As one can imagine, studies have shown a positive impact on desire and satisfaction when pregnancy worries are lifted from the minds of both you and your partner.
How Does One Prepare for a Vasectomy?
Together, you and your physician will determine a plan for your day of surgery. This discussion can include, but is not limited to:
- What you may eat and drink the day of your surgery.
- Whether to take your home medications.
- What sort of medications the physician will be giving you to relax you beforehand and numb you during the procedure.
- Paperwork and forms to be filled out before your procedure.
- Who may accompany you to the hospital and how they can be supportive to you.
What Happens During A Vasectomy Procedure?
The procedure itself takes about 30 minutes. Before, during, and after the vasectomy, our nurses will monitor you for your safety and comfort. You will be required to have your partner, a family member, or a friend drive you home after you have been discharged from Treasure Valley Hospital.
What is The Expected Recovery Time For a Vasectomy?
Most patients are home resting within a couple of hours. Soreness, bruising and swelling are common side effects, but these will be improved within 24-72 hours. Overall recovery times vary, so consult with your physician to find out when you may resume normal your daily activities, including sex.
