What is a Skin Graft?
Up to 75% of adults will experience hemorrhoids in their lifetime. Are you in that group? When you've tried over-the-counter treatments and lifestyle modifications yet your hemorrhoid and discomfort remains, it could be time to take the next step.
A hemorrhoidectomy is the surgical removal of a hemorrhoid. It is the strongest response to a persistent hemorrhoid, with an extremely high percentage of patients never having a recurrence. Prior to deciding on a hemorrhoidectomy, your hemorrhoid might respond to hemorrhoid banding. Your general surgeon can help you decide the right course.
What Diagnoses Are Treated with a Hemorrhoidectomy?
Hemorrhoids come in several grades. Earlier grades of hemorrhoids include a bit of bleeding, some pain and/or some bulging. These may be treated with topical creams, changes in your diet, or soaking in a bath. A hemorrhoid is considered Grade III or Grade IV when protrusion and prolapse accompany the other symptoms. Hygiene may occasionally be a challenge. At this point, you should seek out guidance from your general surgeon.
How Does One Prepare for this Type of Procedure?
Your treatment plan will be personalized depending on your past medical history. Overall, preparations will include:
- Not eating or drinking for a few hours before the surgery, possibly midnight the evening before.
- A bland diet or a clear liquid diet the day before also makes the before and after periods of hemorrhoid surgery easier.
- A few hours before your appointment, you will be asked to use an enema. This is an easy way to give your surgeon an excellent view.
- Having a family member or a friend with you to bring you home, as you may be drowsy and sedated following pain medication.
Ways to Hasten your Recovery and Give you Relief Along the Way Include:
An increase in fluid consumption. Hydration is key to avoid constipation.
An increase in fiber consumption. Fruit and vegetables, fiber capsules, or Metamucil are all things you can use. Fiber softens stool if you're constipated, and it firms up any stool along the way if you're prone to loose stools or diarrhea.
A cushion or a hemorrhoid pillow to distribute your weight and avoid a pressure point.
Sitz baths, bathtub soaks, or showers. You can buy a small tub that fits over your toilet seat, and you can add warm water as well as baking soda or iodine, depending on what you find gives you the most relief.
Over-the-counter pain medicine such as Tylenol and ibuprofen can be used in alternating doses to keep ahead of any pain flares.
